No Rules Tonight (2024)

Synopsis

It’s time for the annual winter camp at Anjeon University. A full weekend, deep in the mountains, with no parental supervision. But this is no ordinary getaway. It is 1980s South Korea, where police are always watching and even the slightest bit of self-expression can lead to arrest. Notes on This Title

This series focuses on a group of Korean young adults in the 1980s. The first volume introduces a character who is a lesbian, as well as a character that questions their gender and is confirmed to be a trans man in the second volume. The second volume also introduces an elderly woman who is strongly implied to be a lesbian.

No Rules Tonight is somewhat of a sequel to Kim and Estrada’s 2020 release (along with Ko Hyung-Ju), Banned Book Club. Banned Book Club, No Rules Tonight, and Good Old-Fashioned Korean Spirit all feature a character that is a stand-in for Kim running a book club that discusses banned books. However, each volume can be read independently, and queerness does not become a thematic element until No Rules Tonight.
